Wilma Kate Young Cardenas, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, at Richmond County Hospice Haven. Born on August 12, 1944, in Richmond County, North Carolina, Wilma lived a life filled with love, laughter, and creativity.
For over 30 years, Wilma owned her own wallpaper hanging business, devotedly serving the people of Richmond and the surrounding areas. Her artistic touch and keen eye for design left a lasting impression in the homes she transformed. Yet, her proudest accomplishments were not found on wallpaper rolls but rather within the cherished bonds she nurtured with her family.
Wilma was known for her fun-loving spirit, kindness, and capacity for love. She radiated joy wherever she went, bringing warmth and brightness to the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy is one of resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
She leaves behind her cherished husband, Johnny Cardenas, who stood by her side through all of life's moments. Wilma is also survived by her loving children: Jennifer Cole (Robbie), John Lassiter (Michelle), Justin Flores, Joshua Flores, and Tony Mora. The joy of her life extended further with her grandchildren, including Ryan Cole (Fiancé Taylor Chance), Shannon Lassiter, Harper Flores, and Emma Parker, as well as her great-grandchild, Walker Cole.
Wilma reunites in spirit with her beloved parents, Clinton and Gracie Mabe Young, who instilled in her the values of love and hard work that she carried throughout her life. Her laughter and kindness will be deeply missed but will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
A funeral service to honor the life of Wilma will be held at 1pm on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe with Rev. Butch Park officiating. Family will receive friends from 11:45am ~ 12:45pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Ellerbe Cemetery.
As we remember Wilma, we celebrate a remarkable woman whose impact was felt far beyond her wallpaper business. She embodied warmth and love, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. In our memories, she lives on eternally, guiding us with her spirit and filling our hearts with love.
