Virgie Smith Clark

October 10, 1939 — October 8, 2025

Ellerbe

Virgie Smith Clark, a beloved matriarch, departed this world peacefully at her home in Ellerbe, North Carolina on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, just two days shy of her 86th birthday. Born in Richmond County, North Carolina, on October 10, 1939, Virgie was the cherished daughter of the late Roy and Catherine Chavis Smith. Her radiant spirit and indomitable strength shaped the lives of her family and community.

A devoted wife to her late husband of 60 years, Larry Herbert Clark, Virgie shared a rich life filled with love, laughter, and purpose. Her career was as diverse as it was impactful—retiring from Gilead Manufacturing, she also nurtured her entrepreneurial spirit as the co-owner of C & C Bake Shop in Ellerbe for many years. The delicious aromas of her cakes and dumplings filled countless homes, reflecting her deep love for cooking and baking, which she pursued with passion and skill. For over two decades, she served the children of Ellerbe Middle School, bringing comfort and joy to students through her dedicated work in the cafeteria.

Virgie's proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly her family. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and sister, she made indelible marks in the hearts of those she cherished most. She is survived by her son, Tim Clark (Lori) and daughter, Sandra Hudson Stevens (Chuck). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Lauren Clark, Alex Clark (Jordan), Kristin King, Deidre Hudson, and Joshua Hudson (Liz), as well as her great-grandchildren: Damian King (Azpen), Tyler King (Abby), Alexus King (David), Desmon Hudson (Alison), Brooklynn Hudson, Bella Hudson, Natalie Hudson, and Colin Hudson. She was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren: Sophia Aguierre, Kamdyn King, Brandon Hudson, Catalina Hudson, and Meeka Rinck.

Virgie’s love extended further to her sister, Louise Caulder (Earl), a bond that enriched her life. Her family and friends will forever hold dear the memories of her warmth, kindness, and infectious spirit.

As we gather to honor her life, visitation will be held at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 1:30 pm at Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Lee officiating. Following the funeral service, she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Larry in Ellerbe Cemetery.

Virgie Smith Clark leaves behind a legacy woven with love, food, and family, and though she may have departed, her spirit will continue to light the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered.

Memorials may be made to Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 116, Ellerbe, NC 28338, or McLean Presbyterian Church, 735 Fire Tower Rd., Ellerbe, NC 28338.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her granddaughter Diedre, who has spent the last several months with her grandmother, other family and Richmond County Hospice for their excellent care during her final days.
