Susanna Toland Black, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, in Rockingham, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 4, 1939, in Burke, New York, Susanna touched the lives of many with her fun, kind, and loving personality.
A proud high school graduate, Susanna dedicated a significant portion of her life as a kitchen assistant at William Manson Nursing Home, where she not only shared meals but also shared warmth and kindness with residents and staff alike. Her compassionate nature made her a cherished part of the team, and her commitment to serving others was a testament to her caring spirit.
As a devoted member of Saint James Catholic Church, Susanna was actively involved as an Alter Rosery, embracing faith and community in her daily life. Her presence in the church was felt deeply by those who knew her, and her spiritual journey brought comfort not only to herself but also to those around her.
Susanna’s greatest pride and joy were her family, to whom she dedicated her life. She is survived by her loving daughter, Donna Wright (Keith), and her cherished grandchildren: Jacquie Wright, Katherine Wright, Jamil Wright, Brandon Black, and Tiffany Vandesuen. Furthermore, she rejoiced in the bond she shared with her great-grandchild, Adrian Braswell. Each moment spent with her family brought her immense joy, and they fondly remember their time together as precious memories to be treasured forever.
She is also survived by her siblings, Bertha Leavitt, Mildred Toland, and Helen Woodliff, who carry forward her legacy of love and connection.
Susanna was predeceased by her husband, Robert William Black, and her children Barbara Black, Crystal Black, Aloney Black, and Bonita Cilinski, as well as her parents, Robert Toland and Irene Wyman Toland. The loss of these loved ones shaped her life, and she carried their memory with her, instilling in her family the values of love, resilience, and compassion that defined her own life.
A Celebration Of Life will be held at a later time at Saint James Catholic Church.
