Patricia McDonald Messer, 79, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at Richmond Pines Health of Hamlet, surrounded by her family.

Patricia was born on November 27, 1946 in Richmond County to the late Robert Lee McDonald and Agatha Lucille Layton McDonald.

Patricia had many interests, from painting classes, sewing and reading to teaching Sunday school at Bethel Baptist Church. She loved to help people in anyway she could. She enjoyed time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her son Timothy J. Messer, her brother Mitchell “Mickey” McDonald, and sisters: Betty Overstreet and Toni McDonald.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, James Messer; Sons: Roger Wayne Messer (Tammy) and Jeffrey Scott Messer (Maria); grandchildren: Kyle Messer, Bradley Messer, Cailin Messer, Grace Messer and Mya Messer; 8 great grandchildren and sisters: Jean Davis and Nancy Sowers

The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, August 24, 2026 from 12:45 to 1:45 pm at Bethel Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastors Thomas Butler and Steve Eddins officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.
