Mary Kay Lewis Chapman, 84, of Rockingham,  a beloved educator and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Rockingham, North Carolina. Born on April 13, 1941, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Mary Kay’s life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and quiet strength.

Mary Kay devoted much of her life to shaping young minds as a sixth-grade teacher in Richmond County Schools. Her patience, warmth, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child left an indelible mark on the lives of countless students who were fortunate to learn from her. Beyond the classroom, she poured her heart into her community through her active participation at St. James Catholic Church in Hamlet, NC, where she was a pillar of faith and fellowship. Many fondly remember her joyful spirit and tireless energy during the church’s annual BBQ events, where she found great joy in coming together with others in celebration and service.

Her journey was enriched by deep and loving relationships. Mary Kay is survived by her devoted son, Rodney M. Chapman, who carries forward her legacy of love and kindness and her brothers, Roddy Lewis and Donny Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Tom Allen Chapman, and her daughter, Megin Lewis Chapman, whose memories she treasured dearly. She also mourned the loss of her parents, Ernest and Mary Lewis, who gave her the foundation upon which she built a life full of compassion.

A memorial service honoring Mary Kay’s life will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 11:00 am at St. James Catholic Church, located at 1018 Hamlet Avenue, Hamlet, North Carolina. Friends, family, and community members are invited to gather to celebrate her remarkable journey, to share in the memories she crafted, and to find comfort in one another's company.

Mary Kay Lewis Chapman’s legacy is one of generosity, faith, and devotion—a life beautifully lived and deeply loved. She will be remembered not only for the lives she touched but for the upstanding example she set as a compassionate mother, educator, and friend. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her and resonate within the halls of the schools and church she so dearly cherished.
