Lela Marie Richardson

Lela Marie Mabe Richardson, 96, completed her earthly journey Friday, February 14, 2020, at her home on Derby Road.  She was born in Stokes County, NC, on January 6, 1924, the daughter of the late Joe Ham Mabe and Minnie Bennett Mabe. She was married to Thomas Albert Richardson for 43 years at the time of his passing in 1988. She was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters and was the last surviving member of her family.

Her life was devoted to her church and her family whom she loved dearly. Her public jobs had been in textiles, working with J.P. Stevens, and in the hosiery industry, but she also worked in tobacco and many aspects of farm life. She enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing and baking for her family. For many years, she served as treasurer of her church, White Oak Springs Primitive Baptist, Star, NC, where she was a dedicated member.

Her memory will be cherished by her three children, Gurney Thomas Richardson (Ann) of Pinehurst, Joyce Richardson Hendricks (Richard) and Jimmy Lee Richardson (Beth), both of Derby; her precious grandchildren: Donna Gephart (Lance), Chris Richardson (Brandi), Stephen Richardson and Doug Richardson; plus eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Carter Funeral Home-Ellerbe Chapel from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday, February 17, and at other times at the home.

The funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted at her church, White Oak Springs Primitive Baptist in Star, at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 18, with Elder David Hogan and Elder Don Stacey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.

Serving as Pallbearers are Mark Auman, David Auman, Bobby Mabe, Burt McBride, Phillip McBride and Chris Richardson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be considered to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1791 E. Broad Avenue, Rockingham, NC 28379.
