James Vergil Messer, 79, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 27, 2026 at Richmond Pines Health of Hamlet, surrounded by his family.

Vergil was born on July 18, 1947, in Jackson County, North Carolina to the late James Henry and Margie Marie Seay Messer.

Vergil worked for BV Hedrick as a heavy equipment operator. He was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church. He loved to ride motorcycles and spending time in his woodshop. Vergil was there for anyone in need, always lending a helping hand.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Patricia McDonald Messer, who passed away on August 20, 2026 and his brothers Everett Messer and Harold Messer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons: Roger Wayne Messer (Tammy) and Jeffrey Scott Messer (Maria); grandchildren: Kyle Messer, Bradley Messer, Cailin Messer, Grace Messer and Mya Messer; and 8 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm at Bethel Baptist Church. The Funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with Pastor Steve Eddins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
