James Ralston Benson

James Ralston “JR” Benson, 97, of Rockingham, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 at his home. 

Mr. Benson was born August 28, 1925 in Bladen County, NC, a son of the late David and Pearl Walker Benson. He had served his country in the US Army and worked in maintenance with Martha Baum Plant, JP Stevens and Beaunit Manufacturing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy Perkins Benson and his siblings. 

Surviving are his children, Gail Covington Quick, Rick Benson (Gail), Randy Benson (Kellie), Tammy Stewart (David, Jr.),  and John Benson (Laura); grandchildren, Rene` Covington Ward, Lee Covington, Riley Benson, Holden Benson, Heather Benson, Clay Benson, Maxie Benson Coburn, Christopher Shepley, Ashley Stewart, JoAnna Benson; great grandchildren, Haley Covington, Parker Covington, Jene` Ward, DeeAnna Ward, Kylie Benson, Leah Manivong, Cody Shepley, Jace Shepley, A.J. Blue, Cloie Shepley, Juniper Benson, Alexis Benson, Zimmie Coburn and Lainey Coburn. 

Funeral services will be at 11 am Tuesday, August 29, 2023 in the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Rev. Sonny Diggs officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Monday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.
