Evelyn Wallace Moss

Mrs. Evelyn Wallace Moss, age 95, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at her home of 65 years on Foushee Street, surrounded by her loving daughters and grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Carter Funeral Home at 10:00a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow.

Evelyn was born in Richmond County, NC, on February 19, 1930, to the late McDuffie Wallace (Mack D. Wallace) and Madelyn Evelina Wallace, both of Rockingham. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Chandler Moss, and her daughter, Camille Moss Ballard. She is survived by her daughters, Beverly Carolyn Moss Crouse and Elizabeth Ann Moss; and four grandchildren: Christina Elizabeth Moss (Peter Katos), Dr. David Samuel Crouse, Hannah Wallace Crouse (James Branley, Jr.), and John Irvin Ballard III.

Evelyn was a woman whose life reflected faith, love, and service in every season. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, pouring her heart into her family, church, and community with love and unwavering devotion. She lived with strength and resilience, facing personal challenges with dignity, courage, and grace, never allowing hardship to overshadow her spirit. Her hugs, her encouragement, and her gentle wisdom are treasures that will be remembered for a lifetime. She was a creator and teacher at heart. Evelyn attended Meredith College and graduated from East Carolina College in 1955. She began her teaching career in Lee County before returning home to teach in Richmond and Anson Counties. Her legacy of service lives on through her vision and leadership in establishing the first Summer Youth Volunteer Program at Richmond Memorial Hospital in 1970, known as the Candy Stripers (for girls) and Volun-teens (for boys)—a program that has inspired generations of youth to serve others. Evelyn’s creativity and talent is also seen in all the beautiful clothes she enjoyed sewing for her children and grandchildren as well as the beautiful collection of needlework she leaves behind. To those who knew her, Evelyn was a source of encouragement, hospitality, and warmth. She welcomed friends and neighbors with kindness, lived her faith daily, and inspired everyone around her by the way she carried herself—with patience, humility, and steadfast love. Her legacy will live on not only in her family, but in every life she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed toward the establishment of The Evelyn Wallace Moss Fund for Hospital Youth Volunteers at Richmond Memorial Hospital.
