Doris Witherspoon Hamilton, 99, of Raleigh passed away peacefully at The Cypress of Raleigh on Wednesday July 29, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Doris was born in Richmond County on January 14, 1927 to the late Franklin Thomas Witherspoon and Willie Alice Haywood Witherspoon.

She attended Meredith College and played field hockey. Doris was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Rockingham for many years, where she loved helping in the nursery. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time homemaker. She enjoyed trips to the beach with her husband and spending quality time with her family. She also liked playing bridge and a shopping trip.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Fred Terrell Hamilton; Daughter Terrell “Terri” Hamilton Northcutt; brothers: James Ernest Witherspoon and Gerald Witherspoon; and sisters Kathleen Witherspoon Hamer and Jean Witherspoon Hawkins.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Judy Lamoureux and Tommy Hamilton (Tina); grandchildren: Kathryn Northcutt Houchin (Charlie), Ashley Northcutt Rominger (Bryson), Bennett L. Northcutt, Beth Perry (Kyle) and Will DeLaney (Madison); great grandchildren: Gipson Houchin, Tate Rominger, Liam Perry and Callie Perry; and her brother Phillip Witherspoon.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday August 8, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham with Rev. Will DeLaney officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1:15 pm to 1:45 pm prior to the service. Inurnment will be held privately at Eastside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Rockingham or Richmond County Hospice.
