Donald Elwood Russell, a beloved figure in his community and a cherished family member, passed away peacefully at his home in Richmond County, North Carolina on June 12, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on December 19, 1945, in Richmond County, Donald was known for his kind heart and humorous spirit, which made him a joy to be around.

Donald led a fulfilling life, celebrating milestones both personally and professionally. As a retired conductor for the Seaboard / CSX railroad, he dedicated many years to ensuring trains operate safely and efficiently. His profound sense of duty was apparent during his time serving in the military police with the U.S. Army, where he also showcased his skills as a boxer while stationed in Pennsylvania.

An alumnus of Hoffman High School, Donald enjoyed a spirited youth, playing basketball for the Hoffman High School Basketball team and filling his days with laughter and camaraderie. This love for sports carried through to his adult life, where he found pleasure in watching westerns, fishing, and playing bluegrass music. His passion for life was evident in every activity he embraced.

In addition to his professional and personal endeavors, Donald was proud to be a 30-year cancer survivor—a testament to his strength and resilience. He faced life's challenges with a smile, keen wit, and unwavering kindness. Above all, Donald was most proud of his family, who he cherished deeply.

He leaves behind his devoted daughter, Jennifer Russell Grooms; his step-son, Dennis Allen Guinn; his cherished grandson, Taylor Alexander Thornton; and his step-grandchildren, Dakota Allen Guinn and Journey Grace Guinn. Donald also leaves behind his beloved sister, Phyllis Shaver and her husband Charles, and his brother Lonnie Russell.

Donald is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Alice Russell; his father, Lonnie G. Russell; his mother, Gracie Greene Russell; his step-son, Mark Thomas Guinn; his grandson, Zachery Wayne Thornton; Son-In-Law Kevin Grooms and brothers Richard, Noah, Jimmy, and Howard Russell, all of whom he missed dearly. Their memories remain a source of comfort for his family.

The family invites all who knew and loved Donald to join them in celebrating his remarkable life. Visitation will take place at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The funeral service will be held at Beaver Dam United Methodist Church in Rockingham, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Though Donald has left this Earth, his spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and love will continue to inspire all who carry his memory forward.
