David William Benson, 69, passed away on December 24, 2020 at his home. David, known to many as just “Poppy”, was born on November 7, 1951. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Rachel Benson, a daughter, Patty Benson West and wife Barbara Kelly Benson.
Poppy’s greatest joy was his grandson, Noah Jordan. He loved watching Noah play soccer from the time he was 4 until Noah’s senior year as a Richmond Raider. He and Noah often poked fun at one another, ate pepperoni pizzas and watched British television. He taught Noah the basics of golf and electrical work and lots of other valuable life skills. They were the best of friends and shared such a special bond that demonstrated family is who you claim wholly and love unconditionally.
In addition to Noah Poppy is survived by his step-daughter, Wendy Kelly Jordan and her husband, Butch Jordan. Poppy loved to eat anything Wendy cooked—but especially meatloaf. He cherished the times he spent with Butch watching military movies, documentaries or Storage Wars. They laughed together and solved many of the world’s problems in Poppy’s living room.
Poppy is also survived by his brothers Gene (wife Bonnie), Jeff (wife Tammy), Scott (wife Linda) and Steve. Poppy would always share with Noah, Butch or Wendy when he got to catch up with one of his brothers whether in person or on the phone. He enjoyed those conversations no matter how frequent or few they were. Age teaches us the importance of family.
Other surviving relatives include his grandchildren, Casey, Carley and Chandler West.
A private service will be held in early spring as per Poppy’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, any remembrances can be made to Victory Baptist Church, 171 Clemmer Rd Rockingham, NC 28379. Preacher Edwards was a faithful shepherd to Poppy, and Poppy loved the time he was able to attend Victory Baptist. The congregation welcomed him and Barbara and loved them for many years. Poppy would want the small congregation with the mighty witness to be blessed in his memory.
Any friends or family that feel led to do so may visit with the family on Saturday, January 2, 2021 between 2 and 4 pm at Poppy’s home, 102 Wilderness Drive. Please respect all COVID recommendations.
