Curney Locklear, 89, of Hamlet passed away on Tuesday August 18, 2026 at Quail Haven of Pinehurst. He was born on January 20, 1937 in Robeson County to the late Webster and Retha Sampson Locklear.
Curney was a strong-willed, fearless, hardworking man who lived life on his own terms and was proud of the life he built. As a father of five with limited formal education, he worked hard to provide for his family and never let where he started determine where he could go. From cutting pulpwood to becoming an entrepreneur and building successful businesses of his own, including Locklear & Sons Mulch Co. and C&D Transportation, his accomplishments were a true reflection of his determination and work ethic. He was happiest outdoors, took great pride in his lawn, and had a special love for animals. Curney was completely himself—a tough and determined man with a kind heart who loved his family deeply.
His grandchildren were an especially important part of his life. He gave them more than just wonderful childhood memories—he gave them time together. The memories they made with their grandpa helped create a closeness between them that has remained strong through the years and into adulthood. The stories they still tell, the things they still laugh about, and the bond they continue to share are all pieces of him that will live on long after his passing. Of all that Curney worked for and accomplished throughout his life, perhaps his greatest legacy can be found in the family he loved—the sons he raised, the grandchildren he adored, the memories he gave them, and the bonds that will continue for generations to come.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Donna Locklear and son Michael Lockey.
Surviving are his children Deborah Cline, Charolett Mayoral (Hector), Glenn Lockey and Randall Lockey; grandchildren: Christopher Cline, Jessica Rice, Brittanie Wiggins, Heather Lockey, Devin Lockey, Joshua Lockey and Leela Lockey; great grandchildren: Stetson, Lila and Cohen; his brothers and sisters and many extended family members.
To honor his wishes, no formal services will be held.
