Carol Ellerbe Chappell, 90, of Ellerbe passed away Sunday, September 27, 2026 at her home.

Mrs. Chappell was born December 25, 1935 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Elsie Allen Ellerbe. She graduated from Ellerbe High School, Class of 1954, attended High Point College, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and received her Master’s Degree in Human Growth and Development from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She retired from the Richmond County School System where she was a remedial reading specialist at Mineral Springs School in Ellerbe for 25 years. She was also a longtime member of Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church, PCA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Larry Branson Chappell, her sister Margaret E. Lowdermilk and her niece Dianne Harvey.

Surviving are her children, Joie Tavener (Roger), Joshua Chappell (Kim) and Jon Chappell; grandchildren, Owen Tavener (Chelsea), Katie Baker (Curtis), Alex Chappell (Caroline), Wesley Chappell (Hannah) and Elizabeth Chappell (Logan); great grandchildren, Orie Tavener, Riven Tavener, Graham Chappell, Hayes Chappell, Nathan Chappell, Landon Chappell, Jackson Chappell, Elsie Mabe and one on the way Baby Girl Baker; nephew, Mike Lowdermilk; great nephew, Chris Harvey (Elizabeth) and their children William, Graham and Jackson Harvey and great niece Amanda Lowdermilk.

The family will receive friends from 10:45 – 11:45 am Saturday, October 3, 2026 in the fellowship hall of Ellerbe Presbyterian Church, PCA. The memorial service will follow at Noon in the Sanctuary with Rev. James Watson officiating. The family held a private interment at Chappell Cemetery.
