Rev. Joseph Bernard Cox, 81, of 197 Hannah Pickett Ave. Rockingham, went home to be with his Lord Friday, August 25, 2006 at Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Rev. Cox was born February 17, 1925 in Georgetown County, SC a son of the late Edward Bailey Cox and the late Rev. R.E. Powers and Bessie Mae Hardy Cox Powers. Rev. Cox graduated from Holmes Bible College and entered the ministry in the South Carolina Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1950. He served at Hemingway First Pentecostal Holiness Church ( 3 times) , Conway Pentecostal Holiness Church, Camden First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church in West Columbia, and East Rockingham Pentecostal Holiness Church ( 3 times). He retired from the ministry while at East Rockingham Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1994 and then became pastor of Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was currently serving. He had served two terms on the Board of the SC Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church , former chairman of the Richmond County Ministerial Association, served in the National Guard, a member of the Board of Directors at Richmond Memorial Hospital, the Board of Trustees for Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital and was instrumental in the founding of Richmond County Hospice. He was an avid hunter, being an original member of the Savannah River hunt club, an avid golfer and fisherman and was a regular at the Holiday Restaurant Breakfast Club . Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Virginia Pope Cox of the home, daughters and sons in law, Gale and Greg Porterfield of Columbia, SC, Bernee and Wes Tuttle of Mobile, Alabama, grandsons, Joseph and Benjamin Tuttle of Mobile Alabama, Brothers, Rev. David Cox of Waltersboro, SC, Robert Powers of Camden, SC, Jack Powers of Georgetown, SC and Rev. Dan Powers of Greenville, NC. Sisters, Cleonis Benton of Murrell’s Inlet, SC, Faye Powers of Garden City, SC, and Margaret Cameron of Camden, SC. A service to celebrate the life of Rev. Cox will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at East Rockingham First Pentecostal Holiness Church on Hannah Pickett Ave. with the Revs. George Cashwell, Donald Duncan, J.D. Simmons, Jimmy McKenzie, Dan Powers, and David Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park with Revs. L.D. Driggers and Harris Jordan officiating. The family will see friends from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Monday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home on Hannah Pickett Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in Rev. Cox’s name.
