Mr. Herman H. Bennett, 85, of 118 Gallimore Road, Ellerbe died Monday, March 20, 2006 at Hospice Haven in Rockingham. Mr. Bennett was born April 14, 1920 in Montgomery Co., a son of the late Jasper and Daisy Smith Bennett, A longtime member of Marcus United Methodist Church, Mr. Bennett served on the building committee for years. He was Sunday School Superintendent and lay leader and attended services as long as his health permitted. Mr. Bennett and his wife spent countless volunteer hours keeping the grounds at Marcus Church. This was their special gift and calling. Mr. Bennett worked at Burlington Industries in Raeford for fifty one years, along with his wife, Doris for fifty years. He retired in 2002 at age 82 and she retired in 1999. Their hobby was growing a big vegetable garden-enough to feed the whole Windblow community. Mr. Bennett, a veteran of World War II, was drafted into the U. S. Army in January, 1942. He served with the First Division of the 179th Field Artillery Group in the European Theater, where he received five inactive battle stars, a good conduct award and the Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He earned the rank of Corporal. After the war ended, he returned home October 10, 1945. Five sons of Jasper and Daisy Bennett served in the military and all returned safely. Mr. Bennett is survived by his devoted wife of fifty six years, Doris Reynolds Bennett, two brothers, Ether of Jackson Springs, and Robert of Carrollton, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by brothers, Cornelius, Clayton, Waylon, and William ‘ Bill ‘ Bennett; and sisters, Ronnie B. Timko, Dorothy Bennett, Cleo B. Garner, and Elvia B. Carter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at Marcus United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Burns officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home on Gallimore Road.
