Onie Painter

Mrs. Onie M. Painter, 88, formerly of 914 US Hwy 220 North, Rockingham died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Autumn Care of Biscoe. Born October 22, 1919 in the Stories Creek Community in Person County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jennie Lynn and Charlie Painter and wife of Lester ‘Red’ Painter for sixty four years before his death in 2004. Mrs. Painter is survived by daughters, Phyllis Waters of Rockingham and Faye Atkinson and son-in-law, Will of Troy. Also by grandchildren, Henry F. Waters, Jr. and Cheryl Speight (Chris), both of Rockingham, Angela Elkins (Mike), Sharon Harkins (John), and Courtney Atkinson (Susan), all of Troy and great grandchildren, Lauren Nettles (Cale), Sara and Kristen Speight, all of Rockingham, Adam , Aaron, and Katie Elkins, Andrew and Matthew Harkins, and Marin Atkinson, all of Troy. Mrs. Painter is also survived by a nephew, Ronald and wife Cathy of Roxboro, sister-in-law, Minnie Jordan and her son, Merrill and wife Peggy of Oxford and many special cousins. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Henry F. Waters, Sr. and sister, Margaret Pulliam. Mrs. Painter was the oldest living member of the Church of Christ in Rockingham at the time of her death. She was active in the Jane McKimmon Home Demonstration Club, having served as president for twenty-one years, retiring in 1991. Funeral services will be conducted graveside 11:00 am Thursday, October 9th in Crestview Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. William S. Kearse, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 am Thursday in the fellowship hall of Crestview Baptist Church.
